S.S. Umballa was sunk on 25 December 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-49 - approximately 8 nautical miles South-West by West of Cape Scala, Gulf of Policastro. She was enroute from Karachi and Syracuse to Naples with a cargo of barley.
