S.S. ST. GILES  -  WW2

The S.S. St. Giles was a tugboat, originally built in 1919, that served Australia during World War II, being requisitioned by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and commissioned as HMAS St. Giles in 1940 for auxiliary patrol and naval service. This vessel played a role in Australian maritime operations, including assisting damaged ships like the U.S. transport S.S. Portmar in 1942, showcasing its utility in the defense and support of Australian shipping during the war.

SUDDEN DEATH OF VISITOR
Early this morning, John Thomas Gibson, 61, a ship's officer, of Blight street, Northbridge, collapsed and died in his room at the Great Northern Hotel, Newcastle. Mr. Gibson had been under treatment at Northbridge.
