H.M.S. CALGARIAN  -  WW1

HMS Calgarian is torpedoed by the German submarine U19 off Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland.
The crew manages to isolate the damage but the U boat captain presses home the attack even though the cruiser is surrounded by destroyers and other ships, and torpedoes her again, and she sinks.

SINKING OF THE CALGARIAN.

THREE TORPEDOES FIRED.

A SUBMARINE SUNK.
London, Wednesday.

The survivors from the armed mercantile cruiser Calgarian. which was torpedoed and sunk on March 1, included 20 injured.

The first torpedo, they state, did but little damage, and then two others were fired 45 minutes later. One missed the vessel, but the other penetrated the

engine room, killing the majority of the staff, splintered the decks, and smashed several of the ship's boats to atoms.
The concussion threw many men over-board. The losses of the boats were not felt, as British destroyers rapidly rescued the survivors.
One of the enemy submarines, it is added, was immediately bombed and sunk.
