S.S. EUMAEUS (Liverpool)  -  WW2

She was a 7,735 GRT steam cargo ship that was sunk on 14 January 1941 by gunfire and torpedoes from Italian submarine Cappellini at position 08° 55' N 15° 03' W. The submarine shelled the vessel from about 2,000 yards then moved closer and open up with machine gun fire as well. The lightly armed vessel, employed at this time as a troop ship, defended herself bravely for about an hour but finally she had to be abandoned due to extensive damage to the bridge and engine room - but only when all the ammunition was exhausted. Captain Keith Gabriel
Advice was received on Monday by Mrs. R. S. Overend that a grandson, Keith Gabriel, second son of Dr. J. E. and Mrs. Gabriel, of Hobart, and late of Sale, had been killed in action at sea. No further details were available. After leaving school Keith Gabriel chose the sea as his avocation and served his time with the Blue Funnel Line and only a few months ago gained his Master Mariner's certificate. He was born in Sale. Through out his school days and in the marine service he displayed a splendid manhood and personality, so much so that when he suffered an accident the chairman of the Blue Funnel Line of steamers took him to his home to recuperate. He seemed to have an assured future. At the outbreak of war his services were made available to his country for which he has given his life. He has two brothers serving with the A.I.F. abroad.
