The SS Lewis L. Dyche was an American Liberty ship that served as a cargo and ammunition transport during World War II, ultimately sinking after a catastrophic explosion caused by a Japanese kamikaze attack in the Philippines, with the loss of 71 lives

Three Australians Listed as Missing

WASHINGTON, Monday.-The War Department has listed as missing three Australians, including one South Australian, serving with the United States merchant marine.

They were Messman Leslie V Roberts, of Wattle avenue. Brighton. S.A.; Messman James Challon, of Chippendale. Sydney: and Messman Terrence Ferguson. of Marrickville, Sydney.

Mrs. Roberts today said she had no official advice that her husband was misting. He is 42. He joined the A.I.F. in May,

1940. but was invalided out in November the same year. In September last year he joined the U.S. auxiliary fleet running military supplies to combat areas in the South-West Pacific. In November, he transferred to the U.S. merchant marine, serving aboard a ship taking supplies to the Philippines.

He was born in London, came to Australia in 1923 under a teachers' exchange scheme, married. and remained in Australia.

There are four sons in the family, two in the Air Force.

Presumed Lost In U.S. Merchant Ship

Mrs. L. V. Roberts of Wattle avenue, Brighton has been officially notified that her husband Mr. Leslie Roberts, recently reported missing has been presumed lost while employed in an American merchant marine vessel which was destroyed through enemy action. Mr Roberts was formerly a school teacher at the Brighton School.
