The S.S. Tambar was an Australian coastal freighter that served in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) as an auxiliary minesweeper and later as a salvage and boom defence vessel during World War II, under the name HMAS Tambar. She was involved in a tragic "friendly fire" incident in 1942 that resulted in casualties.

SMITH.-- On 30th September, at Milne Bay, Keith, aged 18 years and 8 months, late Commonwealth Salvage Board, beloved only Child of Mrs. J. A. Smith, Dowar Street, Coorparoo. Brisbane. He laid down his life for his God, King, and Country. Deeply mourned.
