S.S. KOMATA (Wellington, N.Z.)  -  WW2

Komata was en route from Suva, Fiji Islands to Nauru and shelled on by Komet and forced to stop. 2 crew members were killed by shellfire but the remainder taken over by the Komet, the Komata was afterwards scuttled and sunk 17 miles south-east of Nauru.
The crew of Komata was landed on Emirau Island on Dec. 21st, 1940,  and provided with foodstuffs for a longer stay. Some days later they were found by an Australian plane and quickly rescued by RAN ships, who landed them in Sydney on Jan. 1st, 1941.
