FATE OF THE KYARRA
SUNK BY TORPEDO.

MELBOURNE, Sunday. — News has been received in Melbourne of tho loss of the A.U.S.N. line steamer Kyarra,  formerly a popular passenger vessel engaged in the Australian coastal trade.
The steamer was torpedoed.
The Kyarra made one trip as a regulation hospital ship, and subsequently was used as a transport by the Commonwealth authorities. At the time of her destruction she was running under Imperial control.

Joseph Hardy, a wireless operator on the Kyarra, in a letter to his relatives, tells how the vessel sank when torpedoed.
Hardy was relieving the regular operator, and was lifted out of his chair to the doorway, 10ft. away. Three of the crew were standing by the rail, and saw the torpedo coming, but were unable to escape. The explosion occurred at 8.50 a.m., and the ship sank at three minutes past 9 o'clock, going down stern first, turning over, and disappearing.
