S.S. BOORARA  -  WW2

Boorara was a 6,570 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1913 by Bremer Vulkan of Germany for Norddeutscher Lloyd as Pfalz. From 1915 she was owned by the Australian Government and renamed Boorara. She was damaged on 20 March 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-31 approximately 2.5 nautical miles South-East of Beachy Head. She was enroute from London to Sydney with a general cargo.

DRAKE-Ernest A. Drake, dearly beloved second son of Samuel and Annie Drake, of Pirie-street, New Town, through accident aboard ship, aged 34 years.

LATE FIREMAN DRAKE.
In reference to the regrettable death of Fireman Drake. Mr. F. Drake was informed of his son's death in consequence of a letter from the district naval officer for Tasmania, who requested Captain D. Baker to convey the sad intelligence to the next of kin, together with a sincere expression of the sympathy of the Minister and of the Naval Board. The circumstances prevent us from publication of details, but the whole community will grieve at the accidental death of this very promising and gallant son of a well known Tasmanian citizen. Fireman Drake was many years in the service of the Union Steamship Company. Mr. Drake, it may be mentioned, has two other sons at the front.
